Þráinn Freyr Vigfússon is the Chef and co-owner of Sumac Grill + Drinks, ÓX and Silfra Restaurant. Óx is a small eleven seat kitchen table restaurant hidden behind Sumac. Óx focuses on Icelandic ingredients and traditions while serving modern cuisine. Sumac on the other hand is influenced by North Africa and Lebanon in its cooking. Silfra serves Scandinavian cuisine at ION Adventure hotel and is located outside Reykjavík by Þingvellir.
Prior to opening his restaurants in 2017, Þráinn Freyr worked as the head chef at Blue Lagoon from 2013 to 2016, as well as head chef at Kolabrautin Restaurant from 2011 to 2013. He was also the Chef de Partie and Sous Chef at Grillið, Hotel Saga from 2003 to 2011 and Chef de partie at Domaine de Clairefontane in France in 2006.
In 2011, Þráinn Freyr took seventh place in the Bocuse d‘Or, one of the world’s most prestigious international cooking competitions. He was awarded the silver medal in the Scandinavian chef of the year in 2009. Þráinn was awarded the gold medal in the culinary competition One World in 2008, he won the respected award of being the Icelandic Chef of the year in 2007.
