Iceland’s most elite athletic competition, the Reykjavík International Games, returns from January 24 – February 3, 2019! Kicking off in 2008, the competition originally took place over a single weekend and held 8-12 tournaments, but has since grown to last over two weekends and hold 16-20 tournaments. Furthermore, the number of foreign visitors has increased from about 200 to over 600! The games are hosted by the Reykjavík Sports Union with help from national sports associations and sports clubs in Reykjavík.
The exciting games will hold competitions in 19 different sports, including:
- Artistic Gymnastics
- Figure Skating
- Olympic Weightlifting
- Table Tennis
You can find the schedule for the first weekend of events here and the second weekend here. There will be celebrations on Sunday, January 27 and Sunday, February 3 at the Laugardalsholl Sports Hall to announce the winners of each weekend’s events.
In addition to the games, there will be a conference on Wednesday, January 30 at Reykjavík University and on Thursday, January 31 at the Sports Center in Laugardalur Valley to discuss sports and violence amongst athletes, educators and more.
