New Winter Drinks from Brennivin

Iceland’s favorite aquavit is serving up fresh cocktails just in time for the holidays.

Dazzle your guests at any holiday gathering this season with these new drinks from Brennivin! Brennivin, Iceland’s signature spirit, is an aquavit made from pure Icelandic spring water and spiced with caraway seeds. You can now bring the taste of Iceland right to your home by experimenting with these special edition drinks and cocktail recipes inspired by the Christmas season!

“The Real Christmas Spirit” Jolìn 2017

As the name suggests, Brennivin’s latest product is a Christmas twist on the traditional aquavit. This new Christmas edition sports a festive red label and a golden colored liquid, as opposed to the classic water-colored Brennivin. The gold flair comes from a combination of Brennivin, sherry and bourbon that is carefully prepared and stored for six to eight months. Once it’s released from storage, the flavor offers a highly refined aroma of cherry, vanilla and peppercorn, as well as a soft texture and taste of dried fruit and shades of sherry and bourbon. This drink will pair perfectly with your Christmas dinner and can be easily mixed into any cocktail recipe!

The Buddy System

1 1/2 ounces Brennivín

3/4 ounce Budweiser syrup

1/2 ounce fino sherry

1/2 ounce lemon juice

Garnish: smoked glass

Created by the team at Montana’s Trail House, this Brennivin drink takes a bit more preparation, but will convince your guests that you are a cocktail savant! To concoct “The Buddy System,” first create your smoked glass by creating a coarse ground mixture of cinchona bark, wild cherry bark, stick cinnamon and star anise. Light the mixture to a low flame with a match, and then place a regular wine glass upside down over the flame. You will soon see the mixture extinguish and fill the glass with smoke. Leave the glass upside down until you are ready to fill it with the drink.

To create your Budweiser syrup, combine an equal ratio of Budweiser beer and white granulated sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Add in three cinnamon sticks and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer until sugar is completely dissolved. Let the mix simmer until reduced by 10-15%. Cool and strain into the rest of the ingredients.

Prepare the cocktail by shaking the rest of the ingredients with ice. Then simply strain into your smoked glass over ice. Voilà! You now have a tasty and unique cocktail to brighten up any holiday party.
